The temperatures begin to chill. The leaves crumble to the ground and trees are left bare. Still, Autumn remains a favorite time for many in the northern hemisphere. Indeed, Americans in particular chose autumn overwhelmingly as their favorite season in a 2023 survey (45% chose autumn as their number one season with summer a distant second with 24%).
Autumn in the northern hemisphere paints the leaves of our communities, parks and forests in an abundance of brilliant colors, from the golden yellow of aspen leaves to the brilliant scarlet colored red maple leaves to russet colored oak leaves. These colors cheer us as we enjoy the second spring that Albert Camus imagined.

Autumn brings other excitements as well – football and soccer seasons kick off; Halloween sparks creativity and ghoulish fun; harvest and Thanksgiving holidays bring families and communities together. The season contributes its own menu too, as fresh gourds, vegetables and pies delight the palate. Pumpkin pie anyone?
Without the dampness of spring, the torrid heat of summer, and the gray cold of winter, autumn is the perfect season to spend outdoors, enjoying nature as it brilliantly changes in front of our eyes.
