On November 29, 2024 the world will celebrate the centenary of the death of Giacomo Puccini, the last of a dynasty of composers and who became the leading Italian composer of his generation.
Puccini was born on December 22, 1858 in Lucca, a village in Tuscany, Italy. He was raised along with his six sisters and a brother in the house of Corte S. Lorenzo and received his very first music lessons from his father Michele.
Puccini’s first notable operas are widely considered to be Le Vili, Manon Lescaut, and Edgar, all written and performed within thirteen years of completing his studies at the Milan Conservatory. Puccini’s four-act opera, La Bohème, would soon follow. La Bohème remains one of the most popular operas in the world today.
Puccini achieved acclaim with his operas Tosca (1900) and Madama Butterfly (1904), which made him the richest and most celebrated composer of his time. Between 1910 and 1918, he completed La Fanciulla del West, La Rondine, and Il Trittico, which included Il Tabarro, Suor Angelica, and Gianni Schicchi. His work on Turandot, begun in 1920, proved challenging, and Puccini often considered abandoning the project. Diagnosed with laryngeal cancer after years of battling a persistent sore throat, he went to a specialist clinic in Brussels for pioneering radiation treatment. He died of the illness a few days after the procedure, in Brussels on November 29, 1924. Turandot remained incomplete at his death and premiered in 1926, quickly becoming one of his most performed operas.
Puccini was a true internationalist; he was keenly aware of everything happening in the world of music. His compositions reflect influences from France’s Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy, and the Russian Igor Stravinsky.
