VOTE!!!

Tuesday, November 5, 2024, is Election Day in the United States.  While so much attention is focused on the presidential race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump, there’s a lot more at stake on November 5 for all voters in every state.

In addition to the race for president, 34% of all federal senators are up for re-election and all 435 seats in the House of Representatives will be contested.  Statewide elections are also critically important and often impact individuals more than national contests.  Nearly 65% of all state senate and nearly 85% of all state lower house seats are up for grabs in November.  Add to that all the county, town and village offices being contested, as well as the many state propositions voters will decide on, and its easy to see how the weeks leading up to Election Day can be overwhelming and exhausting for voters and candidates alike.

According to the Pew Research Center, the elections of 2018, 2020 and 2022 were three of the highest turnout elections in many decades. About two-thirds (66%) of the voting-eligible population turned out for the 2020 presidential election – the highest rate for any national election since 1900. The 2018 election (49% turnout) had the highest rate for a midterm since 1914. Even the 2022 election’s turnout, with a slightly lower rate of 46%, exceeded that of all midterm elections since 1970.

As of today, more than 14 million Americans have already voted through the early voting process.  Many millions more will vote by mail in the days ahead.  For those of you who intend to vote, be sure to know what and whom you are voting for prior to visiting your polling station.  For those of you not registered but interested in voting, there’s still time to act, but it is running out. Many states still allow new voters to register, but many have deadlines during this week.  If you want to register, start with your local or state board of elections, or visit https://www.usa.gov/register-to-vote
