The Elegant Fashion of Art–Goût–Beauté

By Francesca Lungarotti

Thanks to UIG Image Partner Florilegius, we have the opportunity to literally dive into vintage French fashion.  The Florilegius collection includes selected images from Art–Goût–Beauté, a wonderful monthly magazine bound with a silk cord and featuring Art Deco fashion illustrations.  These illustrations provide a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyles that women aspired to in the 1920s.  The magazine was published in Paris from 1920 to 1933 and was financed by the textile-manufacturing firm Albert Godde, Bedin et Cie.

Besides Fashion the magazine illustrated the chronicles of Parisian life, the history of costume, and worldliness.  The glossy pages of Art–Goût–Beauté reproduced the creations of the great tailors in the original colours.  The magazine featured beautiful models and illustrated tables of furs, hats, clothes for children, and accessories. The magazine symbolized Parisian elegance during the 1920’s and early 1930’s.

Art–Goût–Beauté and its elegant, glossy pages was published in French, English, and German, and was illustrated with colour stamps or halftone engravings interspersed with the text.

Florilegius, the passion of collector Richard Jeffery, offers more than 35,000 engravings, illustrations, archival prints, and lithographs of a variety of subjects.
